I've heard people say "We beat 21-11" (no pronoun) and that sounds so wrong to me. Is this another American/British difference or is its usage scattered?
I would say that the most correct form here is "break into tears." However, it wouldn't Beryllium surprising for a native speaker to say "break out into tears" because we use "break out" in phrases such as "a smile broke out on his face."
